LLB463 Legal Clinic CLIK! Project Placement Semester 1 2019

In semester 1 2019, Dylan, Naomi, Meghan and Chloe undertook a placement with the CLIK! Project. The CLIK! Project uses street law to teach young people on areas of law that are relevant to them. The purpose is to empower the participants with knowledge and skills in order to help them prevent legal problems from occurring, recognise when they have a legal problem and how to solve their legal problem. Dylan and Naomi taught young people drug laws and police powers, and Meghan and Chloe taught employment law and workplace bullying. This video summarises our experience while on placement.

    Hi all:

Your video animation marks a great effort and it sounds like you enjoyed your time working on the project immensely! From your video, it is evident to me that you have worked together closely, share similar ideas and values about the project, and that you undoubtedly benefited from practical experience in the legal sector. The use of music in your presentation was a welcome and refreshing change to others I have viewed, so well done!

Great video guys! It gave me my first insight into placement at a community justice project. It also highlighted the difference between the skills needed at a justice project and community clinic, such as flexibility and creativity. It also broadened my idea of what careers are available within the legal sector. It seemed like such a valuable experience, with a service-oriented focus. Hope you consider pursuing it after your placement has ended!

Well done and great video. It sounds like you have developed a number of skills that will be of great benefit to your future careers, but hopefully imparted a number of skills onto a vulnerable part of community who need role models. While you may not have seen yourselves as role models while you were working in the project, I am sure that a number of the individuals who you saw would have looked-up to you. While we often have our long-distance glasses on with a view to a legal career, we sometimes forget what a positive and often constructive role we have on those who are vulnerable (and often impressionable).

I was wondering, how did you devise the topics that you discussed – drugs, police powers, employment and workplace bullying? How did you select people to talk to about these topics?

Sounds like a very rewarding project for all of the stakeholders you identified.

    Well done!

    Hi All,

Your presentation animation had the main points that you elaborated on and was very easy and clear to follow. It was interesting to learn of a community justice project where you taught and empowered participants of various groups. In your preparation for the project, you stated that you did not know much about the audience. In this light, what was the research like (in terms of amount, which sources, and knowing what was relevant) to prepare you with the knowledge and information for effective teaching?

Hi Dylan, Naomi, Meghan and Chloe,

Thank you for sharing your clinical experience with us – it was great to hear about the positive impacts of your workshops / lessons on the community. I enjoyed learning about the cross institutional collaboration that was required to ensure the success of the program and the various skills that you developed throughout your placement. During your project, what do you think was the biggest challenge you faced and how did you overcome this challenge? What are some examples of the systematic issues that disadvantaged youth experience?

Hi Dylan, Naomi, Meghan and Chloe,

Your presentation was insightful and entertaining. I can appreciate the importance of providing this kind of service to young people, especially those who may be at risk. I can also empathise with trying to condense legal and complex terminology into lay persons language. Maintaining the attention and engagement of a younger crowd also sounds like a unique skill to develop. Did you guys find this challenging?

CLIK! offers a different service from my placement where clients were seeking legal advice on a matter, your placement sough to engage and educate a young audience. It is a service that has peaked my interest after watching your presentation.

It is evident through your presentation that you were able to build on a plethora of different skills. Cultural awareness, in particular is something that will no doubt be transferable in your career and in your everyday life.

Well done on both a really well put together presentation and on your placement!

I really appreciated the use of the animation video, it showed a well thought out presentation and was a creative and engaging way to provide your information. It was interesting to hear the work undertaken by both you and CLIK! as I have not had any experience with community justice projects. From my own experience with a legal clinic, many clients come through the door who do not understand the law so it think it’s great work that you sought to educate on a range of matters. You stated that you had to find creative ways to engage with young people to educate them, did you find this to be difficult, or did CLIK! have systems in place already that you were able to draw upon to help? Overall this was well presented and I am really intrigued by the work you got to experience.

Hi Dylan, Naomi, Meghan and Chloe

Well done on your informative and engaging presentation. The CLIK! Project sounded like a very unique and rewarding experience for you all. Your presentation has advanced my understanding of community education and the diverse nature of the legal profession.
Creating lesson plans and educating disadvantaged youth is an irreplaceable experience that helped you to develop very unique skills from other placements including public speaking and creativity. Was it difficult creating engaging lesson plans for disadvantaged youth? It is definitely a skill that I have no experience in. I like how your presentation highlighted a newfound understanding of the systemic issues disadvantaging youth from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. Your presentation and placement experience was inspiring and eye-opening even just for the viewers of your presentation.
